LEAVES OF A DRYING TREE
web |
Black book of the Endangered Species
The tree is drying out
but the leaves stay green.
In the sun, they whisper
over the hole in the trunk
where night has gone.
The older the tree
the more beautiful the leaves.
The closer we come to the sunset
or to the fall,
the more sadly evening mosquitoes and planets
whine and whirl,
the more beautiful the leaves.
Green leaves
that whisper
nothing.
Bright ones
that sing vainly
to the wind.
These are my thoughts.
Yet they don't belong to me.
The leaves are separate, small,
lonely beings,
sprouted from a drying tree:
Loneliness
makes us kin.
They are the dark young
who speak to themselves
in the crowd down on the square,
in a crazy sunset town.
