The pearl-driver grew old in the ocean.
Even the sharks waved friendly fins at him.
But once
when a little crab pinched his finger
to stop him, tell him
what strange animals inhabit that other world
where the sea ends,
the pearl-driver understood that he'd been accepted,
and decided he couldn't
catch oysters any more.
