They separated on one bright and cold day at the very end of winter. They did as civilized people do: quietly and painfully, after a long consideration of all possible compromises. Shortly after that he returned home, erased her Skype number, Facebook page, e-mail address, cell phone number, and poured himself a drink. And drank it. Then he shut the windows and the front door and nailed them. The keys and the cell phone he threw in the toilet. Then he flushed it again, and again, and again.

Late in the night, she knocked on the door, broken down and determined to compromise on what she had believed she would never permit.

They spent the rest of the night pushing notes to each other under the door. In the morning they ran out of ink.
